Boilers of Dining – Maddie O’Connell

When Maddie is not at Purdue, you can catch her relaxing at home with her two Podengos, Maggie and Jack (read to the end to see them)! She’s always busy, whether it’s school or work so keep reading to learn more about her!

To start off Maddie, can you tell us where are you from?

I’m from Mentone, Indiana, which is about 2 hours northeast.

That’s not too far at all! Now what year are you in for college?

I am a junior, but technically I am a senior as I came to Purdue with credits.

What are you majoring and minoring in then?

I am majoring in Industrial Engineering Technology and Supply Chain Management while minoring in Design & Innovation, Product Lifecycle Management, and Organizational Leadership.

Holy cow, that is a lot girl! And you work on top of all that?! Wow, where do you work and what you do?

I am an intern working with the Student Success team managed by Mary Jo. I do a lot of different tasks, for example, I help with the orientation of new employees in all operations, host events for engagement, plan out material for training, and more.

Sounds like you have a lot to do on your plate. Do you fit in any time for clubs?

I am part of the Student Life Advisory Board associated with the Vice Provost of Student Life office and I am a WiTty sister so I mentor freshmen at the Polytechnic Institute.

Sooooo what do you do to relax?

I really like watching Netflix and hanging out with my friends. Currently, I am rewatching Grey’s Anatomy for the 3rd time and I recently started Brigerton!

Going back to your work, how long have you worked for Student Success?

I have been with Student Success since January of 2020.

Did you work for PD&C before this position?

Yes, I actually started as a Freshman through the Jumpstart program in 2018. I then worked at Wiley for one and a half years and I became a Student Supervisor!

What would you say is the hardest aspect of juggling work and school during a pandemic?

When it’s all virtual, it’s hard to separate work time and school time. I can pull up my email to answer work stuff and then pull up another tab for homework.

That is hard! Let’s move on to some questions about your favorite things. What is your favorite food to eat from the dining courts?

I am currently in LOVE with the froyo at AADR and the pizza at Ford.

Those are so delicious! How about your favorite dessert from anywhere?

That’s so hard! I would say Talenti pistachio iceream, the cake truffles I make, and sugar cookies with frosting – the plain ones can get out of here!

What a hot take. Where is your favorite place you’ve been to?

Florida! I’ve gone there multiple times and it’s very relaxing. One of my family’s friends live there and they let me stay with them, use their nice pool, and chill out. I am looking forward to going to Ireland though!

Wait, why and when are you going to Ireland?

I am applying to go study abroad there next spring semester! Which is also my final semester at Purdue.

That’s so exciting! What are you looking forward to the most about going?

I have never been outside of the country so experiencing a different culture will be interesting. Also, in Dublin there is an “O’Connell” pub and street so I want to go see it!

What a coincidence! Since that trip is still far away, what are you looking forward to this summer?

I am looking forward to spending time with friends and having bonfires on my back porch.

Well, thank you so much for talking with us Maddie and showing us Maggie and Jack! Also, we hope you have the best trip ever to Ireland next year!

To the left is Jack and to the right is Maggie ❤

Week 11 is done and were marching closer to the end of this semester and graduation for some of us! Remember to still exercise precaution since we are still in a pandemic, even as you wait to sign up for vaccinations. Keep an eye out for those emails Boilermakers and enjoy your weekend!
